Partial Marking Rule: For MSQs, you get partial marks ONLY if all your selected options are correct (none wrong). Selecting even one incorrect option gives −2, regardless of how many correct options you also selected.
JEE Advanced vs JEE Mains
Concept Depth
Advanced tests deep conceptual clarity and multi-step reasoning, not formula plugging. Single questions often combine 2–3 chapters.
Question Variety
MCQ, MSQ, NAT, Matrix-Match and Comprehension passages — far more variety than the pure MCQ format of Mains.
Partial Marking
Unlike Mains, Advanced rewards partially correct multi-answer responses — but punishes any wrong selection heavily.
Single Attempt
Only 2 attempts in consecutive years, only for those who clear Mains cutoff. No "extra chances" like Mains' two sessions.
Two Papers, Same Day
6 hours of intense testing across both papers in a single day — endurance and time management are as critical as knowledge.
The Final Filter
Only top ~2.5 lakh JEE Mains rankers qualify to attempt Advanced — competing for ~17,000+ IIT seats across 23 IITs.

Preparation Strategy
Connect Concepts
Advanced loves combining chapters — e.g. Rotational Motion + Friction, or Coordination Chemistry + Thermodynamics. Build cross-chapter understanding.
Master Calculus & Mechanics
These two areas form the backbone of Advanced. Practice multi-step problems involving Differential Equations, Rotational Dynamics and Electromagnetism.
Time per Question
With ~54 questions in 3 hours, you have ~3.3 min/question. Practice solving complex problems within strict time limits.
MSQ Strategy
For Multiple Correct questions, only mark options you're 100% confident about. One wrong mark = −2, wiping out potential gains.
NAT Precision
Numerical questions need exact answers to 2 decimal places usually. Practice precise calculation without calculators.
Both Papers Matter
Don't neglect Paper 2 — both papers count equally for the final rank. Balance preparation across both formats.
